Problem with wifi at home?

Sometimes your internet doesn't work as it should. And we understand how annoying that can be... Let's have a looktogether to see what could be going on and what you can do about it.

Sometimes there are works or service interruptions in your area. Or your internet speed is reduced because you have used up your monthly volume. Before checking the wifi in your home with our handy wifi checks, it's best to check if something else could be causing your wifi woes.

General problem

If works are underway in your area, you may experience a temporary internet interruption. In My BASE you can see whether works are underway or scheduled.

Is your monthly basic internet volume used up? Then what you're experiencing may be that your internet speed has been reduced. And that obviously impacts your wifi connection. Check your usage via My BASE, online or in the app.

Do the wifi checks

No general problem? Then do the five wifi checks to improve your wifi connection.

Your internet signal arrives via a coax cable. Is it attached properly? If you are able to twist it by hand, it's best to tighten it. Use an open-ended spanner and tighten your coax cable as tightly as possible.

Is your cable tight and the problem is still not solved? Then reset your modem. You do this by unplugging the lead from the mains socket for 15 seconds. You can also perform a reset via My BASE. Choose ‘modem settings’ and then click ‘restart modem’.

Is your coax properly attached, have you reset the modem and are you also having problems when internet via a UTP cable? Contact us.

Does it work fine via a cable? Then go to check 2!

Check your wifi signal at the same location with a different device. Do you have a good connection now? Then maybe it's a problem with the device. Be sure to read our article on wifi problems on a single device.

At home, you connect to your home network, the network created by your own modem. Are you (accidentally) connecting to your neighbour's network, for example? If so, this has an impact on your browsing experience. So, make sure you are connected to your own network. Check the details on your wifi passport.

Tip: Are you also using a wifi booster? Then switch on just one wifi network. That way, your devices will automatically connect to the best signal. You can switch your wifi network on and off in My BASE or the My BASE app.

Other signals occasionally interfere with the wifi signal from your modem. Your modem is doing its job perfectly, yet your browsing experience is not what it should be. That's a real bother. Fortunately, you can easily solve problems caused by interference.

Do you have any of the following in your house? Switch them off briefly, or unplug the mains lead for a moment. While they are off, test whether your wifi works better, by watching a video on the internet, for example. Does it work better? Then try moving your modem farther from this device. A metre is usually all it takes.

  • Alarm systems or security cameras
  • Cordless telephone
  • Babyphone
  • Wireless speakers or game controller
  • Microwave oven Weather station
  • Wireless light switch or doorbell

Is your wifi network not reaching where you want it? Then you can also opt for wifi boosters at BASE. These expand your network and provide you with internet access wherever you like in your home.

Do you already have wifi boosters and do you still have coverage issues? Read more about what you can do.
