How to make mobile calls via 4G and Wi-Fi?

Thanks to the new technologies, you can make calls via 4G and Wi-Fi. Until recently, you could only do this via the 3G or 2G network. What's more, it costs you nothing extra; your usage is simply deducted from your remaining minutes.

Good to know

Are you calling abroad via 4G? Don't forget to use the country code, also when you are calling to a local number. Do you for instance call from the Netherlands to a Dutch number via 4G? Make sure to type +31 before the number you're calling.

How does it work?

During your phone call, the smartphone automatically connects to the most appropriate network.

What do you need?

Of course, you need a mobile monyhly plan, coverage and a compatible device to phone and surf on the 4G network. Most devices already support this technology. Check that your settings are correct...

There are 2 ways of calling...

Via 4G or wifi

  • In this case, you make a phone call in the normal way. This is usually done via the phone icon on your smartphone, as you are used to.

  • Your usage is charged in the form of call minutes.

A calling app

  • In this case, you consciously choose to make (video) calls via a specific app such as Skype, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger or FaceTime.

  • Your consumption is charged as data. Unless you are connected to a wifi network.

How to do it?

It's clearly recommended to phone via wifi if you notice that you don't always have the same coverage at home (e.g. because of insulation, neighbours, a nearby lift shaft, etc.).

What is 2G?

On the 2G network, you can still phone and surf for a while. Note that we will also be phasing out the 2G network in a few years' time.

Calling via 2G

You can simply make and receive calls via the 2G network. Note that the quality is not as good as with 3G.

Surf via 2G

Browsing with 2G is very slow. Moreover, you can't phone and surf at the same time.
