How does BASE TV help people who see or hear less?

The smart functions of the BASE TV box and the BASE TV app make the TV experience more comfortable for people who are blind, visually impaired, deaf, or hard of hearing. Think about an enlarged TV guide, high contrast, or audio description. This way everyone can enjoy their favourite programmes.

Good to know

Subtitles for the hard of hearing, audio description (AD), and sign language (SL) are only available if the broadcaster provides them with the programme. We also rely on the broadcasters' information to show the AD and SL icons.

Functionalities for those who are blind or visually impaired

Audio description

Audio description is an extra audio track with a voice-over that describes what can be seen on screen. The voice is subtly added between dialogues and describes what the characters are doing, which facial expressions they have, how their environment looks like, etc. Programmes with audio description are marked with the AD icon in the TV guide of the BASE TV app.

How to activate?

  • On the BASE TV box: press Home and go to Settings. Choose Accessibility > Audio Description.
  • In the BASE TV app: tick on the profile icon and go to Setting. Choose Accessibility.

Enlarged TV Guide

On channel 555 there is a special TV Guide for the visually impaired. The TV Guide is shown in bigger characters. You can also open the guide with voice command.

How to activate?

  • In the menu: press Home on your remote and click on the gear icon. Go to Accessibility > Enlarged TV Guide. The enlarged TV Guide is only available for the BASE TV box.
  • With voice command: keep pressing the microphone button and say "Enlarged TV Guide".

High Contrast

Are you having difficulties with reading the TV menu? Enable the high contrast menu. This makes sure there is more contrast between text and background. This way the menus, texts, and buttons are more legible for people with a visual impairment. High contrast is only available on the BASE TV box.

How to activate?

  • In the menu: press Home on your remote and click on the gear icon. Go to Accessibility > High Contrast. Press OK to enable/disable high contrast.
  • With voice command: keep pressing the microphone button and say "High contrast".

Please note: after you have enabled high contrast, your TV box will restart. This can take up to 2 minutes.

Voice command

Voice command allows you to search and start your programmes or apps, and to switch channels. Say, sing, or yell what you want to do. You decide! Discover more about voice command.

Subtitles

Subtitles for the hard of hearing (closed captions) are special subtitles that do not only display spoken text, but also other important sounds (eg. a door bell, scary music). This way, you can still follow what happens during a movie, programme, or video.

How to activate?

  • On the BASE TV box: press Home on your remote and click on the gear icon. Go to Profiles > Options >Subtitles for heard of hearing.
  • In the BASE TV app: tick on the profile icon and go to Settings > Sound and subtitles > Options subtitles.

Please note: when you have enabled subtitles for the hard of hearing, but the programme does not offer specific subtitles for the hard of hearing, you will get the standard subtitles.

Sign language

Thanks to hand gestures, facial expressions, and body language information becomes more accessible. Programmes with sign language are marked with the SL icon in the TV guide of the BASE TV app.

How to activate?

Click on the profile icon and go to Settings > Accessibility.
