How to measure your internet speed?

The BASE Speedtest directly measures the speed between the BASE network and the location of the device you are measuring with. This way, you have a guaranteed reliable result and measure the correct speed.

How to perform an accurate speed test?

Use the BASE Speedtest. Other speed tests do not always measure the exact speed of the BASE network but rather the combined speed of different networks.

  • Make sure you are the only user on your network.
  • Do not download during the measurement.
  • Make sure there is no spyware or adware on your device. It is always a good idea to perform an antivirus scan!
  • Close other programs. These also consume network speed and affect your results.
  • Do not use an outdated PC, smartphone, laptop or tablet for your test.
  • It is also better not to use a work computer. This is because they often use your employer's network (VPN connection).

So, how do you get the best result? Connect your computer or laptop directly to the modem for the test. Smartphones and tablets are not always able to handle high speeds.

Do you have a good internet speed?

Have you done the speedtest? Great, you now see the results. But what do you have to do with them?

Check if the measured speed more or less matches the expected speed at your plan and address. Want to know what a good internet speed is at your address? Read the article.

What to do when your internet speed is low?

Is your real speed lower than expected? That may depend on several factors:

  • Outdated devices and cables can slow down your speed. Be sure to use recent devices and cables.
  • Web browsers and other software on your devices can impact your speed. Make sure these are always up to date.
  • Viruses as well can slow down your speed. Good antivirus software is never a bad idea!
  • When you surf on Wi-Fi, other factors (such as microwaves, baby monitors, the neighbour's network, etc.) can disrupt the Wi-Fi signal. You'd also surf slower in these cases. Read our Wi-Fi tips for more information!
  • Do you use a VPN connection to surf (on your work laptop for example)? This will also affect your speed.
  • When you have used to many data, you can also surf a reduced speed. Read more about it.

Is your internet speed still lower than the expected minimum speed? Then there might be a problem with your connection. Find out how to solve this.
