Slow Wi-Fi? Boost your connection with these tips

Slow Wi-Fi is no fun. These 6 tips will help you get the most out of your Wi-Fi.

Tip 1 - Don't hide your modem

Don't hide your modem behind a cupboard, easy chair or aquarium. Is your modem clearly visibile in an open space? Your connection is best when you can see your modem (or wifi booster) from where you are using the internet.

Tip 2 - The distance to the modem influences your Wi-Fi signal

The further away you are from your modem, the weaker the signal. It is best to place your modem or wifi booster in the room where you use wifi most often. Just make sure your wifi devices, such as Chromecast or Apple TV, are not too close to your modem or booster. To avoid interference, keep them at least one metre away.

Tip 3 - Wi-Fi struggles to pass through insulation or concrete

Insulation, concrete, glass, metal, water... they can block or interfere with your wifi signal. It's best to place your modem in the room where you use wifi most often, such as your living room. Choose an inside wall to mount your modem on. This is because your modem transmits wifi in all directions, and this way your signal will get to the next room more easily.

Tip 4 - Avoid interference from other Wi-Fi networks

Do you live in a flat or densely populated street? Then different wifi signals may overlap or even interfere with each other. In that case, unplug your modem and/or wifi booster for a few moments. Your modem will restart and automatically choose the best wifi signal.

Tip 5 - Look out for obstacles

Did you know that household electrical appliances can interfere with your wifi signal? Your modem may be doing its job perfectly, any yet your browsing experience may be suffering. You can improve your wifi connection by keeping electrical appliances away from your modem or wifi boosters. Thus, it is best not to place these devices too close or between your modem or wifi boosters and where you use wifi. Appliances that can cause interference:

  • Alarm system or security cameras
  • Cordless telephone
  • Baby monitor
  • Wireless sound system
  • Game controller
  • Microwave oven
  • Weather station
  • Wireless light switch or doorbell
  • ...
