How to measure your internet speed?

The BASE Speedtest directly measures the speed between the BASE network and the location of the device you are measuring with. This way, you have a guaranteed reliable result and measure the correct speed.

Use the BASE Speedtest. Other speed tests do not always measure the exact speed of the BASE network but rather the combined speed of different networks.

  • Make sure you are the only user on your network.
  • Do not download during the measurement.
  • Make sure there is no spyware or adware on your device. It is always a good idea to perform an antivirus scan!
  • Close other programs. These also consume network speed and affect your results.
  • Do not use an outdated PC, smartphone, laptop or tablet for your test.
  • It is also better not to use a work computer. This is because they often use your employer's network (VPN connection).

So, how do you get the best result? Connect your computer or laptop directly to the modem for the test. Smartphones and tablets are not always able to handle high speeds.

Theoretical and effective speed?

The theoretical speed of your connection is determined by your internet subscription and the BASE network. However, there are many factors that affect your speed in the real world. This includes things like your own device, the distance to your modem, the network cable and sources of interference. Lets take a look at what speeds you can expect.

If you have:

BASE Limited Internet

BASE Unlimited Internet

Your internet speed is:

50 mbps

200 mbps

The speed of your internet depends on several factors. Here are some of the most important ones.

  • Your in-home installation: be sure to use a recent network cable, switch and modem.
  • Your device: Older devices and software or viruses can reduce your speed. A good antivirus program is always a good idea!
  • Your browser: Different browsers have different speeds. Make sure your browser is up to date too!
  • Sources of interference: if your internet connection is via wifi, things like a baby monitor, microwave oven and the neighbour's wifi can interfere with your signal. Also be sure to read our wifi tips to learn how to solve these problems!
